Paul describes his career in three chapters: Paul 1.0 (Naval Officer), Paul 2.0 (30 years of corporate life), and Paul 3.0 (the current, still-unfolding chapter) (source: LinkedIn Posts.md).

Paul 1.0 — Naval Officer (May 1988 – February 1996)

Paul entered the U.S. Naval Academy in July 1984, taking the oath of office as a midshipman on his induction day (source: Handwritten.md), and was commissioned as a Navy officer in May 1988, serving until February 1996, seven years and ten months (source: CAREER TIMELINE.md). His Navy service included:

  • A first assignment as a young officer with accountability for vital equipment and a team of sailors in partnership with a demanding, senior enlisted “Chief” who taught him “Don’t Paint Over Rust” (source: Handwritten.md).
  • Standing bridge watches at 24, working toward qualification as Officer of the Deck — the setting for the lesson at the heart of foundation-of-trust (source: Handwritten.md).
  • Deployment to Haifa, Israel in August 1990 during the buildup to Operation Desert Shield, the experience behind enduring-sustained-uncertainty (published later as “The Strength of the Chain”). He is a Desert Shield/Desert Storm veteran (source: Handwritten.md; LinkedIn Posts.md; CAREER TIMELINE.md).
  • Selection to attend The Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey California from 1992-1994. Graduate studies in Applied Math, Applied Statistics, Computer Science and Industrial Engineering. Graduated 2nd in class with a Master of Science in Operations Research. Took second place in the Military Operations Research Society Research Prize competition in 1994.
  • Chief Engineer of the USS John Young (DD-973), a destroyer that had previously failed its engineering examination twice; supervised a department of 80 out of 350 total crew members and turned the organization around (source: CAREER TIMELINE.md).
  • Multiple decorations including Navy Commendation Medal and Navy Achievement Medal.

Paul 2.0 — 30 years in corporate analytics and AI (1996 – 2025)

Over nearly 30 years, Paul led applied analytics practices as the field itself evolved — from Business Intelligence, into Performance Analytics, into Predictive Modeling, Machine Learning, and AI — leading “brilliant problem solvers across multiple industries” and working to bring that value into real-time decision making (source: LinkedIn Posts.md). The full career timeline (source: CAREER TIMELINE.md):

  • Bank One (now JPMorgan Chase), Vice President of Business Engineering, 1996–1999 (3 years). Blended customer service concerns with technology infrastructure development for the nation’s largest Visa and MasterCard issuer, 60+ million customers; led senior project managers, business requirement analysts, and IT consultants; supervised the conversion to a Customer Relationship Management model for Customer Care.
  • Verisign, Senior Director of Business Reengineering, November 1999 – May 2001 (1 year, 7 months). Recruited to establish the Business Process Improvement function during explosive customer-base growth and merger-related integration at the nation’s largest registrar of internet domain names; managed a team of 21, including project managers and quantitative business analysts, to deliver reengineered decision support, MIS, CRM, telephony, and IT infrastructure.
  • UnitedHealth Group, Senior Director of Business Intelligence, November 2001 – January 2008 (6 years, 3 months). Selected by this Fortune 50 health services company to establish and evangelize business intelligence within the Operations segment through a period of intensive growth, industry consolidation, and internal reorganization; direct report to the VP of Business Process Quality Management; directed 15 project managers, 20+ business consultants, and 75+ indirect Black Belt/Green Belt staff.
  • Trumbull Services, a subsidiary of The Hartford, VP of Enterprise Business Intelligence, January 2008 – November 2010 (2 years, 11 months). Direct report to the President of Trumbull Services; selected to establish and evangelize business intelligence functions across the enterprise; strategic advisor for Operational Excellence, product development, and client communications, spanning product development, pricing/positioning/promotion, the software development life cycle, data warehouse design, predictive modeling, market segmentation, client relationship management, and the Microsoft BI stack.
  • The Hartford, 14 years, 10 months across five escalating roles:
    • Claims Data Science AVP, November 2010 – April 2016. Practice manager for the internal predictive analytics and modeling group supporting the Claims department.
    • VP, Chief Data Science Officer, April 2016 – July 2021.
    • SVP, Chief Data, Analytics and AI Officer, July 2021 – July 2022.
    • SVP, Chief Analytics and AI Officer, July 2022 – January 2025.
    • SVP, Emerging Technology and Innovation, January 2025 – August 2025, his final role before retirement.

Trumbull Services and The Hartford together add up to the 17+ years at The Hartford cited in his Retirement Farewell post, since Trumbull Services was itself a Hartford subsidiary (source: LinkedIn Posts.md; CAREER TIMELINE.md). He retired on 2025-08-29. Reflecting on why he stayed, Paul cites the people and how the organization showed up for customers, partners, and each other over how the company itself performed — “I went home each day feeling morally proud of what we did. I found over 30 years in the corporate world that mattered the most.” (source: LinkedIn Posts.md)

Alongside his full-time Hartford role, Paul held three concurrent external advisory and board positions starting in 2022: Gartner (Chief Data and Analytics Officer Research Board Member, August 2022 – December 2023), CAPE Analytics (Executive Advisory Board Member, January 2022 – December 2025), and Accenture (Insurance Innovation Executive Board Member, January 2022 – December 2025) (source: CAREER TIMELINE.md).

His stated favorite activities at work: creating a solution vision together with clever partners, and coaching and mentoring talent (source: LinkedIn Posts.md) — which shows up directly in first-wrong-answer (create a concrete starting point, invite the team to improve it) and kitchen-cabinet (build a deliberate circle of people who’ll tell you the truth).

The single biggest lesson from three decades of applied analytics, in his own words: “while data will always be a challenge, the real effort is in trust building with your users and trust maintenance once they adopt.” (source: LinkedIn Posts.md) This is the throughline of nearly every concept in handwritten and linkedin-posts.

Paul 3.0 — the current chapter (September 2025 – present)

One month into retirement, Paul described the transition as “strange” and “far from over,” and began contemplating what this next chapter would look like (source: LinkedIn Posts.md). Four threads define it so far:

  • Blackthorn Ventures: Owner, self-employed, since September 2025. In his own words: “Provide advisory services to AI-focused startups and public speaking on Leadership and Trusted AI at Scale” (source: CAREER TIMELINE.md). This is the venture this wiki exists to support, including the research on dwellwell, stride systems, and the broader prevention-focused insurance landscape. The “public speaking” half is what delivery formats tracks: the specific formats (starting with TED Talk and the Interview format) his leadership content is being packaged into.
  • APIW New England: Board Member, since May 2026 (source: CAREER TIMELINE.md).
  • Blackthorn Workshop: a separate, unrelated hobby business, self-employed since May 2012, predating retirement by over 13 years. Self-given title: “Executive Chief Senior Managing Principal Partner.” Designer of hand-tooled leathercraft items inspired by tile patterns found in medieval cathedrals, and a blacksmith focused on kitchen tools that are as beautiful as they are functional, sold under the Etsy shop BlackthornWorkshop (source: CAREER TIMELINE.md; LinkedIn Posts.md). It’s the “otherness” activity described in enduring-sustained-uncertainty as essential to enduring sustained pressure — but it is not the origin of the Blackthorn Ventures name; the two simply share it.
  • Packaging and sharing the lessons: Paul intends to keep sharing what he learned about trust-building — coaching, mentoring, and packaging his Navy-derived leadership stories and analogies for wider use (source: LinkedIn Posts.md). This wiki is part of that effort.

Key leadership principles

Each principle below has its own full wiki page with sources and further detail; this is a cross-reference map, not a replacement for those pages. For Paul’s foundational leadership behaviors, guiding principles, and memory aids (a separate, more systematic source from the Navy-story concepts below), see my-leadership-principles.
